Kolkata’s very first Multilevel Car Parking has been established at Salt Lake Sector V by Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA). The Multilevel Car Parking has been built with the sole idea of addressing the problem of traffic dispersal that Sector V that has been facing since ages.

According to Debasish Sen, Chairman, NDITA, ‘The whole idea of the Multilevel Car Parking is to reduce roadside parking, to rehabilitate roadside hawkers and to provide simple solution to traffic dispersal problems.’

Location – near Technopolis and Kia showroom

Each of the 8 levels has 72 parking slots

Built by Mackintosh and Burn Ltd. over an area of 24,000 sq ft., the project took two years to be up and running. Set up at AQ-11 Sector V, it is a ramp-based parking lot with G+8 levels. It has two connectors, one towards the Ring Road and the other towards Technopolis building.

‘Once the car owners park their cars here, for their easy commuting, we would arrange for electric buses from this building to their respective offices free of cost. We are also arranging for cycles to commute to the respective offices as you are aware we are big time into promoting green, pollution-free commuting. With this initiative of NDITA, we are positive that there would be some smooth movement of traffic in the IT hub of Kolkata, especially during the peak office hours. We are also planning a pedestrian zone,’ said an emphatic Debasish Sen.

Floor strips provide necessary traction

The NDITA parking boasts an automated fare collection system

The Multilevel Car Parking is a green building following safety norms with solar panelling and rain water harvesting system. For the same reason, an interesting colour scheme has been chosen for the interior of the building. As you drive your way upwards, the colours of floor interior  gradually change from yellow to dark green and then all shades in between till the 8th level.

Car parking spaces on each floor has been numbered to park 72 cars. The tokens carry the parking number of the specific slots. For instance, on the first floor, the spaces are marked from 101 to 172. On the second floor, they are 201 to 272 and so on. This makes for a total of 576 car parking spaces in the entire 8-storeyed building. The width space for each car is however 8 ft, a bit inadequate its seems for big vehicles to open doors with cars parallely parked.

The ample space with nominal rates at the Multilevel Car Parking at Sector V is a major step forward by NDITA

The parking would be handed over to outsourced agencies,’ said Badri Narayan Kar, Additional Director ILGUS & SMD, UDMAD. ‘Due to the prevailing COVID scenario, the parking controls would be done manually to begin with which would later be replaced with automated fare collection system with advanced technologies,’ added Kar.

As you go up the ramp, you’ll find that it has been provided with thin granite strips at regular intervals. These strips are meant to develop abrasion and thus provide the necessary traction to the tyres while rolling up or descending down the ramp.

Safety measures ensured by the mirrors and the digital markers

The ground level has been designed to rehabilitate the hawkers of Sector V to free up the sidewalks. In this way, about 120-125 hawkers can be rehabilitated. Apart from this, in every level, there is provision for drinking water, toilets and tea shops particularly for the drivers who often have to wait for long hours in the cars.

The open terrace at the 9th level is covered on top with sloping solar panels. There are plans for the enormous (2400 sq ft) open space to be transformed into a sprawling banquet area. Already there are a facility manager’s office, washrooms, kitchen and guestrooms in place. There are also plans to convert one side into a bar cum restaurant.

With the Sector V turning out to be a major business district which on any working day sees immense traffic flow, the development of an organised parking space was essential. This was necessary not only for the convenience of the daily commuters but also to avoid the harassment that parking agents often impose on motorists. NDITA, with its ample space and nominal rates at the Multilevel Car Parking has in fact taken a major step forward in addressing the parking issue of Sector V.
