Traffic congestion is a concern for many motorists. The anxiety it produces can negatively impact the performance of a driver. Heavy traffic requires one to be extra cautious with full attention on the driving conditions. Follow the driving guidelines for safely pulling through the nasty traffic jams without any glitch.

Before hitting the roads
Plan your driving times to avoid the rush. In many cases, leaving even 15 minutes before the start of rush hour or after rush hour ends, can dramatically decrease the flow of traffic on your route. ? Search for an alternate route. This route may be a little longer but may save a lot of time. ? Check traffic conditions in the alternate routes, on online portals such as Google Map or other mobile Apps, before setting of

Driving in traffic congestion
Follow appropriate lane for your movement. For moving forward, follow the middle lane and avoid the right lane since it gets blocked for the intermittent traffic signal towards right. ? Move at a slow but steady speed that is slightly below the flow of traffic, creating a gap with the car ahead. This would help to avoid frequent gear shifts. In the 1st or 2nd gear, the car would automatically move forward on releasing the clutch, without having to press the accelerator. To keep rolling, shift to the 2nd gear the sooner possible. ? Avoid frequent brakes by maintaining the extra space ahead of you. This would create a buffer distance and help you to roll in the stop-and-gomovements. ? To stop the car, shift to neutral, release the accelerator, try to graze and stop naturally without applying brakes, in the buffer distance that you have created. ? Do not ride your clutch to halt the car while it is in forward gears. It is harmful for the clutch, gulps fuel and heats up the engine too. ? If you are stuck in heavy traffic and apprehend detention for a long time, switch off the air-conditioner to save the battery from draining out. Roll down the glasses if required. ? Put off the headlights while crawling in the traffic at night. They are unnecessary and may disturb the driver in front of you. The sidelights are sufficient for such movements
