Coatings are chemical sealants which bond with the surface and give it a long lasting protective barrier. Coatings are used on paint, plastics, rubber, leather, glass etc. Coatings used in detailing basically offer protection. Apart from it various coatings have diverse additional characteristics which make them desirable.
Paint Coatings

When a coating for paint is applied, it not only offers a year-long maintenance free protection but also a gloss that lasts for long. There are different products on the offing. Those at the lower end of the price range provide at least a year long protection and gloss and some of the most expensive ones offer the same for 3 years and more. Protecting the paint includes preventing fading, light scratches and swirl marks. However, swirls might appear after several months of use, but research have proven that those swirls are on the coating and not on the paint. Applying coatings on paint is a difficult task. The paint has to be properly detailed, i.e. polished so that the surface is as smooth as possible. The paint should also be treated extensively with chemicals to clean it. One wrong move and you will have to re-polish the area with a proper compound polish. There are basically two types of paint coatings, Nano and SiO2 (liquid glass) based. A Nano coating is good but gives the car a plastic look. This is what led to the development of glass based coatings. The main advantage of glass based coatings is its consistent brilliant gloss and protection.

Coatings for Plastic and Rubber trim
Many of us have seen how the black plastic and rubber part on our car fades and become greyish or whitish in hue over time. A quick fix is to apply a proper dressing. But those dressings don’t last for more than 2-3 weeks. Trim coatings restore the original colour of the trim protecting it for at least one and a half years without fading the plastics and the trims.

Leather and Fabric coatings
At times water spilled on the seats seeps inside. How would it be if there are water repellent leather seats? Coatings on leather and fabric, once applied, prevent absorption of any liquid by the surface. This also prevents the dirt from sticking to the material and will also stall changes in the colour. Therefore, it becomes easier to maintain leather and fabric. Fabric coatings are also capable of making convertible tops water repellent. There are many you tube videos to prove this.

Coatings for windshield and window glasses
Driving amid a heavy rain makes it difficult for us to look at the roads. Windshield and window coatings are here to help. These coatings are formulated specially and keep the glass cleaner by having a slipper surface when applied properly. Even a light drizzle of water that strikes the glass will roll off. Wind will aid in moving the water from the slippery glass without the need of wipers even in heavy rain. It should be ensured that each surface has to be treated and decontaminated to ensure maximum bonding, which would otherwise leave the desired effect to be short lived
